Key rules
- Texting is illegal for everyone; drivers under 18 may not use a phone at all while moving, except to call 911. p. 41
- Everyone buckles up; children under 8 and under 80 pounds ride in a child restraint, and under 5 and 40 pounds in the back seat. p. 44
- School buses: everyone stops on two-lane roads and on four lanes without a median; with a median, only traffic behind the bus. p. 48
- Move Over: change lanes away from stopped emergency or service vehicles, or slow down if you cannot. p. 49
- Limits: 35 mph in cities and towns, 55 outside them, 70 on interstates; at 55 mph a car needs about 211 feet to stop. p. 53
- Pass at least two feet to the left; never on curves or hills without 500 feet of sight, and never speed up when being passed. p. 55
- Uncontrolled intersections: the car already inside goes first, then the one on the right; left turns yield to oncoming traffic. p. 57
- Roundabouts: yield on entry, go counterclockwise, choose your lane before entering and do not change lanes inside. p. 59
- Railroad crossings: stop 15 to 50 feet from the rail when a train comes; if you stall on the tracks, get out and call the number on the blue sign. p. 60
- No parking within 25 feet of an intersection, 15 feet of a hydrant, on bridges or crosswalks; back up no faster than 10 mph. p. 56
- Signal at least 100 feet before turning, 200 feet where the limit is 45 mph or more; look 10 to 15 seconds ahead and keep two seconds behind. p. 69
- Headlights from sunset to sunrise, when visibility is 400 feet or less, and whenever the wipers are on because of weather. p. 73
- Rain: slow down 5 to 10 mph, never use cruise control, and if you hydroplane ease off the gas without braking; never drive into flooded roads. p. 72
- After a crash, stop, help the injured, exchange information and report it to police if anyone is hurt or damage looks like $1,000 or more. p. 78
